Saturday, February 24, 2018   volunteers will remove Fire Blight - damaged branches from the 104 year old pear orchard adjacent to Joaquin Moraga School in Moraga. The trees are doing better after several years of fire blight removal, treatment with an organic fertilizer last year, and our winter rains in 2016/7.  But unfortunately the winter rains promote the growth of fire blight,

especially if it is a warm rain when the blossoms are open. The Fire Blight infection threatened to kill this historic orchard, which is a source of great local pride and the impetus for the annual Moraga Pear Festival;  In addition, each year the Moraga Park Foundation glean the pears for the Contra Costa Food Bank, supplying  much-needed fresh produce for the hungry (this year more than 8000 pounds of pears from the JM Orchard!).

Pruning for the last 4 years by community volunteers has vastly improved the health of the trees, but some fire blight remains and it will always be a threat to these trees to some degree.

This event is sponsored by the Moraga School District which owns the land, and the Town of Moraga, with the assistance of Republic Services. There will be instruction, tools,  and a lot of fun. Bring gloves, sunscreen, hats and sturdy shoes. If you have them bring (labeled with your name), loppers, hand pruners and (especially needed) pole pruners and orchard ladders.

Come have a fun morning with friends and save our iconic pears!

9-1, Saturday February 24, 2018. 1000 Camino Pablo at Canyon (across from St Monica’s)

The Moraga iKind Project Presents: He Named Me Malala:

This extraordinary film presents the young Pakistani female activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai, who has spoken out for the rights of girls, especially the right to education, since she was a young child. The film also recounts how she miraculously survived and has become even more eloquent in her quest after being hunted down by a Taliban as part of the organization's violent opposition to girls' education. The title refers to the Afghani folk hero Malalai of Maiwand, after whom her father named her.  A powerful film for everyone!  Event details: February 21 at 7:00 PM at JM’s Auditorium, followed by a student panel.

We are pleased to announce a Lamorinda Education Forum on February 8th, from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm in the Stanley Middle School Multi-Use Room, 3455 School Street, Lafayette, CA. Get the latest information on education funding and Governor Brown’s proposed 2018-19 Education budget and its impact on our local schools.
