Physical Education 6-8: (full year course)

While pursuing the refinement of motor skills and social skills, students will also be given formal instruction on fitness concepts, cardio-respiratory and muscular fitness, and nutrition. This course is designed to promote lifelong fitness.  Some examples of the units and activities include the following: square dancing, self-defense, volleyball, soccer, team handball, soft lacrosse, badminton, track, ultimate Frisbee, capture the flag,  designing individual fitness programs,  designing fitness programs for specific sports, individual reports and projects about cultural dances (which may include demonstration, written reports or video).

JM'S PE RUNNING PROGRAM: EXPLAINED
The purpose of running in Physical Education is to enhance the cardiovascular system and emphasize the value of regular exercise in the daily lives of our JM students.

Warm-ups
Each student should plan on running at least one warm-up lap daily in PE class.  The time limit will be adjusted as the year goes on. Students who exceed the time limit may be assigned an extra lap, or may incur a loss of points.

Training Runs
Students can expect one training run each week.  Training runs will vary in length from one to two miles.  The runs will gradually increase in distance and the time requirements will decrease as the year progresses and fitness levels improve.  Students completing these runs under the time limit will receive full credit.  Students finishing over the time limit will receive 75% of the points, or less. Two lap runs are worth 10 points, three lap runs are worth 15 points and four lap runs are worth 20 points.

Mile Expectations
The timed-mile is performed once a month and is designed to measure the student’s cardiovascular performance and improvement.  Students are expected to give their best effort on these runs.  Students recovering from illness, injury, etc should bring a note and will be permitted to make it up. Once the initial timed-mile has been established, subsequent mile times will be graded based on the students best time.

Mile Grading will be as follows
  • “Popping” (improving) one's mile time will result in a perfect  score of 15 points.
  • Equaling or coming within 15 seconds of one's best time will earn 14 points.
  • Finishing within 16-30 seconds will earn 12 points.
  • Finishing within 31 to 60 seconds will earn 10 points.
  • Finishing over one minute of one's best mile time will earn 8 points.
  • Incomplete miles or excused runs will earn zero points.
  • Excused mile runs will made up on designated days and must be approved by the teacher.
  •
Missed Runs
Missed runs due to an absence or parent excusal note must be made-up before the end of the quarter.  Students missing more than three days of PE class must get a doctor’s note. Long-term medical excuses will be modified based on the student’s limitations.

Examples:
  • If a student cannot run due to injury, but can walk; he/she will be allowed to walk the distance for full credit.
  • If a student cannot participate at all, the teacher will assign a long term written assignment(s) that will determine the student's grade for the time missed.
  •
Building on Success
The main goal of the JM PE department is for all students to improve in their fitness levels.  We understand that students improve at different levels and some need modification in order to stay motivated and feel a sense of achievement.
If a student has serious physical limitations, the P.E. teacher will meet with the student to determine a target goal that is challenging and attainable.

Running in Hot Weather
The PE department is concerned about the welfare of students and so has developed some basic guidelines related to strenuous activities during periods of unusually hot weather.
  • The PE department will have a thermometer in place to read the outside temperature.
  • When temperatures are between 85° and 95°, PE teachers will evaluate weather conditions related to temperature; such as, shade structure, breeze factor, humidity and pollutants. A decision will be made concerning a reduction in directed physical activities.
  • When temperatures are 95° and above, PE activities will reduce strenuous exercise; such as running, jumping, and prolonged exposure to the sun.
  • When temperatures reach 100° or over, outside PE activities will be discontinued.
  • Missed training runs due to weather considerations will be re-scheduled.
