Dear Parents:

I feel it is important to inform our parent community of the needs of a growing number of JM students who are severely allergic to certain foods. For those of us with children who do not have this difficulty, it may seem unnecessary; however, if you can imagine your child being in a life-threatening situation due to such an allergy, it does take on a new meaning and level of concern.   Avoidance of certain products is the only way to prevent severe allergic reactions. Therefore, we are asking your assistance in providing these students with a safe learning environment.

If exposed to certain allergens (for example, peanuts, tree nuts, dairy and/or egg products,) some students may develop severe reactions. Students with peanut allergies may develop a life-threatening allergic reaction that requires immediate medical care. A severe reaction may also be triggered by touching, smelling, or coming in contact with items containing peanuts or tree nuts. In order for these students to safely participate fully in all school activities, we are requesting that all parents consider alternatives for foods containing nuts or nut products for snacks, lunch, parties and special events.

Also, as a general safety practice, we encourage you to periodically remind your child not to share food or accept food from other students.

The parents of allergic children and the school administration will be taking a very active role in managing individual allergy concerns, but your help is also needed and appreciated.  Please see our web site (Administration – Allergy Info) for information and suggested snack lunch ideas.

Thank you for your cooperation in our efforts to safeguard these students. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Sincerely,

Mike Plant
Principal
